What does “TC instruments” mean?
TC stands for tungsten carbide – an extremely hard material that is usually used as an insert in the gripping surfaces or cutting edges of instruments (e.g., scissors, needle holders).
Advantages of TC instruments
1. Greater hardness & longer lifespan
- TC is significantly harder than stainless steel
- Instruments stay sharp and effective much longer
- Less frequent resharpening required
2. Better cutting performance
- Especially for scissors: more precise, cleaner cuts
- Less tissue trauma due to smooth cutting edges
3. Secure grip (e.g., needle holders)
- TC inserts hold needles firmly and securely
- Reduced risk of slipping or damaging the needle
4. Cost-effectiveness in the long term
- Higher initial cost, but:
- → longer service life
- → lower maintenance costs
5. High durability
- More resistant to wear
- Better resistance to sterilization processes
Typical TC instruments
- Needle holders (e.g., Mayo-Hegar TC)
- Surgical scissors (Metzenbaum TC, Mayo TC)
- Forceps with TC tips
!!! Possible disadvantages
- Higher purchase cost
- TC can be more brittle → sensitive to impact if mishandled
